Train up a child in the way he should go,
Even when he is old he will not depart from it.
-Proverbs 22:6
Christian parents, families, and Sunday school teachers all over the world have prayed over this proverb as they consider the young children God has placed in their lives . For centuries the Christian Church has found catechisms a useful tool to train the young and old alike in the core tenets of the faith.
The catechism contains 33 questions and answers, a teacher’s guide for how to use the catechism, as well as a scripture appendix.
Perhaps you have thought about trying to catechize some young ones in your life but were unsure of where to start. Unsure if the child (or you) would have the stamina or time to complete hundreds of questions and answers. Unsure if the children would understand some of the language used in the historic catechisms. Or maybe you started to catechize and found yourself longing for colorful pictures to engage their minds more. If so, then The Children’s Gospel Catechism is a resource which we pray will help you train the children in your life. So, how is the Children’s Gospel Catechism unique?
gospel focused
The second word, “Gospel”, in the title of this book is intentional. The Children’s Gospel Catechism is a great place to start because it seeks to lay a gospel framework for children. By focusing on the essentials of the gospel message we provide our children an outline of God’s redemptive plan which can be built upon for the rest of their lives and eternity to come.
simple and accurate
Maybe you have been deterred by some of the language you have seen in catechisms. The Children’s Gospel Catechism seeks to use simple language that a child can understand without compromising the depth and truth from God’s word. Each question and answer is accompanied by supporting scriptures to go over with the children.
illustrated
Children take in so much of the world through their eyes. We read in Paul’s letter to the Romans that God’s creation testifies of His power and glory to all living people–this includes children! We want the illustrations in the Children’s Gospel Catechism to not only aid in the comprehension of the text but to be fun and captivating as well.
Readers will notice the following features about the illustrations:
- They serve as object lessons to illumine the truths on their corresponding page in a way that is memorable, simple, and ageless.
- Diverse ethnicities are depicted so that children from all over the world have a chance to relate to the imagery they see; and also, to convey that these truths are for all tribes, tongues, and nations.
- No depictions of Jesus. We chose to leave Jesus’ physical appearance to the reader’s imagination and any descriptions in the Bible.
- All the imagery is based within a circle but also breaks out of the circle like rays of the sun. This makes the imagery striking and memorable as well as tying back to the cover of the book where the sun is illumining the child’s journey to find truth; which reflects the verse: “Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” -Psalm 119:105
